The Ugly Truth

In 1807 William Wilberforce, who fought for the abolition of the British slave trade, said…

You may choose to look the other way, but you can never again say you did not know.

The sad truth in 2011 is that there are over 27 million slaves in the world today. More than at any time in human history.

During Wilberforce’s time, a total of 80,000 people were trafficked in the trans-atlantic slave trade.  Today, an estimated 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders each year.

Approximately 50% of the victims of human trafficking and slavery are children … 12.6 million. One in every 12 of the world’s 5 to 17 year olds work in the worst forms of child labour. There are an estimated 300,000 child soldiers involved in 30 areas of conflict worldwide, some younger than 10 years old.
