Sydney Refugee Team’s Mission:
Our Sydney Refugee Team works to see the lives of refugees and asylum seekers transformed. In God’s power, our current refugee workers build genuine relationships with refugees and asylum seekers living in Sydney. We desire to equip and empower them to live in a new culture; and to actively engage and equip the local church to reach out to refugees and asylum seekers in their own neighbourhoods and communities. Currently, the team consists of three full-time workers and a wonderful team of volunteers. With expanding opportunities and responsibilities before us, it’s time we seek additional refugee workers to join us.
To bring the hope of Jesus to people seeking asylum and refuge in Sydney by building relationships with several refugee families, and to help facilitate and support connections between volunteer Refugee Companions and refugees.
The heart of Sydney Refugee Team’s interaction with refugees and asylum seekers is the Refugee Companion program. We believe that God brings transformation to people in the context of sharing relationships. Our desire is to see each refugee and asylum seeker family in our care linked with at least one Refugee Companion. It is our hope that the majority of members of the Sydney Refugee Team (both workers and volunteers) will be a Refugee Companion to at least one refugee or asylum seeker family.
Therefore, Sydney Refugee Team Companion Training is required.
As a Refugee Worker, you will serve with us to bring the hope of Jesus to asylum seekers and refugee families living in Sydney through practical, emotional and spiritual support. Through meeting, building relationships with, and discipling one or more refugee families or individuals yourself as a Refugee Companion, you will help minimise feelings of isolation and marginalisation for many who struggle to settle into new communities in a different culture and country.
The experience you gain will enable and equip you further in your capacity as a Refugee Worker to help facilitate the Refugee Companion ministry between other refugee families and volunteers. For both refugee families and volunteers, you will:
- assess needs and facilitate relationships,
- provide support and pastoral care,
- ensure positive relationships as we seek to bring the hope of Jesus in all we say and do.
Depending on your skills, interests and abilities, you may also participate in running our volunteer training programs, as well as other Sydney Refugee Team activities including:
- Family Weekends Away,
- Create In Kindness craft ministries,
- Food Parcel ministry.
This role requires that you raise personal financial support (if needed). Training and support are provided to help you do this.
Your first step is to have a chat with us. Wayne Coady, our Personnel Director, would love to do that, to hear your heart and to help you discern God’s leading in this.
